Health and Safety

Personal Safety Tips:  For your child's personal safety, please be sure he/she:

·         Knows his/her name, address and phone number.

·         Knows the rules of the road when walking from home to school or to the bus stop.

·         Brings a note to school if going to a destination other than home.

·         Knows when you are not going to be home and where to reach you.

·         Knows where to go if school closes early due to storm, power failure, or other emergencies.

·         Knows how to deal with strangers.

Bicycles

Children may ride their bikes to school as long as they demonstrate safe bike riding behaviors. However, bikes cannot be ridden on the school grounds…they need to be walked to the bike rack for safety reasons.  A bike rack is located on the west side of the school next to the parking lot.  Bikes must be locked.  Riders must wear a helmet.

Immunizations

Starting July 1, 2007, the Washington State Department of Health requires all children entering sixth grade or who are 11 years old to show proof of Tdap and Varicella  vaccinations. Prior to school starting in September, your child’s Certificate of Immunization Status (CIS) must be updated. We will need:

  • Written documentation of the date your child received one dose of Tdap or a tetanus containing vaccine in the past five years
  • Written documentation of the date your child had the Varicella vaccination or the date your child had Chicken Pox
  • Your signature requesting an exemption from this state requirement for philosophical, religious, or medical reasons

For additional information: talk to your doctor, nurse, or clinic, or visit www.doh.wa.gov.

OSD Handbook

At the beginning of each new school year, the Olympia School District provides every student and staff member with its policies related to student rights and responsibilities. These policies are contained in a district publication, "Olympia School District Student Rights and Responsibilities".  The handbook is distributed to all students and is used as a guide for staff when orienting students at the beginning of the school year.  It is the expectation of the district that each student will share the publication with parents, after which the parent and student will acknowledge receipt of the handbook by reading and signing the parent acknowledgment form enclosed in the handbook and by retuning that signed form to the school during the first ten days of the school year.

Personal Items from Home – Toys and Handheld Devices

We believe that toys, trading cards, sports equipment, cell phones, digital cameras, personal items of value, and other hand held devices can be a distraction to others at school.  Please have your child leave these items at home.  If you allow your child to have a cell phone or roller blades/heelies, it must be checked in to the office for safe keeping.  We do not want expensive items from home to be lost or stolen.

School Safety Patrol

Students in the 5th grade are chosen for Safety Patrol.  They are trained to carefully monitor and support students crossing the street.  Safety Patrol is positioned on the corner of Legion Way and Boundary Streets.

Harassment, Intimidation, Bullying and Sexual Harassment

The Olympia School District is committed to a positive and productive education and working environment free from discrimination, harassment, intimidation, bullying and sexual harassment.  The District prohibits any of this behavior of students, employees and others involved in any school or district activity.  A process for complaint is in place and may be obtained by contacting either the school or district offices.

Snacks

Healthy snacks are now the policy for the district.  We do not allow students to share food due to allergies and other cultural or religious reasons that a child may have.  Any food items brought to school for school events must be purchased (not homemade), must come to school unopened and must have a list of ingredients on the label.

Theft or Vandalism

We can not be responsible for loss, damage, theft or vandalism of students’ personal property.  Therefore, we request that students leave expensive items at home.

Our building represents a sizable investment to the taxpayer.  If you child should damage something by accident or witness the damage of property, please report it to a teacher or office immediately.  Students who destroy or vandalize school property will be required to pay for losses or damages.  If a student willfully destroys school property, suspension may be necessary.

Tobacco and Alcohol

The use or possession of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs by students is illegal and against OSD policy.  Violation of this policy will result in discipline up to and including suspension.

Weapons

The District enforces a zero tolerance weapons policy.  Students who possess, carry, exhibit or display any item apparently capable of producing bodily harm shall be subject to discipline up to and including expulsion.  Students who are in possession of a firearm at school, at a school activity on a school bus or at a school bus stop will be expelled for one calendar year.
