Volunteers Needed For Garden Party

The Madison PTO will be hosting garden work parties on the third Sunday of each monday, 2 - 3 pm. Just an hour makes a huge difference! No experience necessary. If you’re interested, please contact Mike Taylor at [email protected].

Recess Run/Walk Club (Track Stars or Madison Marathon Club)

Madison would like to bring the joy and benefits of running and walking to all our students so we will be starting a recess run/walk club called “Track Stars”! (We are also mulling the alternate name “Madison Marathon Club”.)

The current plan is for Track Stars to be held each Tuesday and Thursday during morning recesses, 10:15 to 11:00. Depending upon weather, interest, and volunteer availability, we may change the days and frequency of Track Stars.

Track Stars accomplishes several levels of learning for the students.  Aside from the physical education component, students learn about goal setting, intervals (they receive a special token every time they run 5 miles), teamwork and self-confidence because they focus on their “personal best” rather than being the fastest.

We will be using a card system to track miles. The students will be using the outer edge of the playfield to do their laps. Each lap is approximately ¼ mile.

To make Track Stars a success we need your help to help monitor, encourage, and track students’ progress during their run/walk sessions. Would you be willing to help with Track Stars? If so, please sign up below. Someone will reach out to you with more information and start date. Recess paraeducators and Health Room staff will be on hand during these times if needed. Please note that some days Track Stars may on occasion be canceled due to inclement weather, no volunteers, or muddy field.

Track Stars will start as soon as we have volunteers lined up.

Racial Equity Team

Madison’s Racial Equity Team is comprised of school staff and community members. We meet monthly to look at ways to promote equitable practices in our school, and to work on Outcome 4 of the Olympia School District’s Strategic Plan which states, “[Students] Have the skills, knowledge and courage to identify and confront personal, systemic and societal bias.” Our Racial Equity Team meets once a month and uses the Olympia School District’s “Racial Equity Tool” and the language of HB16160 to guide major decisions around programming and services at Madison. (House Bill 1660 requires that all students should be able to participate in any activity we offer.) You may view the tool here>>> Racial Equity Tool, and the FAQ for HB1660 here>>> HB1660.

Madison would like to bring in new members to our Racial Equity Team, particularly individuals of color to help with our collective work and to provide guidance and a background of personal experiences to help guide our wor.

If you would like more information or would like to join in our work, please contact the school principal, Mr. DSK, or our Family Liaison, Angelina Wood.

PTO Updates

The Madison PTO held our first meeting of the school year on Tuesday, September 13! Meetings will be once a month on the second Tuesday, 6:30-7:30 pm in the Madison library. Don’t worry if you can’t make it - we post notes on our website afterwards, and you can always email us with questions!

We had a very full meeting on Tuesday, including talking through many ideas for what the PTO would like to take on this year. We’ll be sending out a follow up email to parents shortly to scope what parents would be most jazzed to participate in - make sure you are on the PTO email list (note that this is a different email list from the school district email list! Email us at [email protected] to get on our list).

The PTO is planning a Trunk or Treat for Saturday, October 29 (time TBD). If you are interested in helping please contact us at [email protected] and we’ll connect you with the parent team who is heading that up.

Email the PTO to be added to the email list: [email protected]. Learn more about the PTO and how to get involved on our website!

Student Verification in Skyward

The first month of the school year is almost over and now that things have settled a little bit it is time to make sure all information is up to date in your students Skyward Family Access accounts. Please log into family access and make sure all information is up to date and correct in case of any emergency. Please remember that only the first guardian in Family 1 can update so please make sure to communicate with any other family members to make sure all information is correct. Thank you. Below is a screenshot of where to update your information in Skyward Family Access.

Parent/Student Survey - Panorama

We will be asking our families to participate in a survey to provide input on their (or their child’s) experience at their school. Responses will provide invaluable insights into how we can improve and adapt our school and our district to their needs. Students and staff will also participate in the survey. Madison will make the survey available  from October 3rd to October 14th.

The responses to these surveys will be completely confidential. We are partnering with a third-party vendor to support us in administering these surveys.

You may complete a survey for each child enrolled in our district or for each school in which you have students enrolled. Your time and feedback are greatly appreciated and will be used by district and school leaders to guide planning for the year ahead

We will send the survey link to our families as we get closer to the October 3rd start date.

If you have any questions about this survey, please don’t hesitate to contact the school principal  Mr._DSK.

October is Disability Awareness Month - Felix Klieser

Being born without arms didn’t stop Felix Kliesser from learning to play the French Horn and becoming an accomplished horn player. Felix has been a member of several international orchestras and has also released several recordings. Most recently Felix released “Beyond Words”, featuring works by Bach and Vivaldi. Thank you Felix for being such an inspiration to us all.

Changes in School Lunch

Starting in October 2022, the Olympia School District will no longer be offering free meals to all students. So, please turn in your Free and Reduced Meal Application before October 1st! (If your family has already qualified for state benefits there is no need to fill out an application.)

Madison receives extra funds for every child who qualifies for free or reduced price meals! If you think your family may be eligible, please complete a free lunch form for the 2022-2023 school year. Your registration will bring this extra funding to our school.

As an example, a family of 5 can earn up to $5,006 per month and still qualify for reduced price meals. You may use the attached application and turn it into the Madison office or your child’s teacher. Or, you may apply online at OSD Skyward Family Access under Food Services.

If you would like help filling out the application or determining if your family qualifies for assistance, contact Angelina Wood, Madison’s family liaison, at [email protected] or 360-596-6321. Or, just fill out your child’s name and your contact information on the application, turn it into the office, and Angelina will contact you. Please turn in ASAP.

Anonymous Tip Line

As a reminder, the Olympia School District has an anonymous tip line that allows students or families to report safety concerns to school officials 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Tips can be shared by phone at (360) 529-0938, as well as by text, email or on the Vector Solutions website. More information is available on flyers posted in OSD schools and on the OSD website.

Madison Student Supplies (Adopt a Class)

As many of you know, Madison is the only school in the Olympia School District that provides Back to School supplies at no cost to all our students. We are able to do this by generous contributions in the form of supplies or monetary donations. To get a head start on fundraising for September’s School Supplies, a Madison Wish List has been created on Amazon for community members to browse and select items they wish to purchase for our students. Madison provides school supplies to all new students who enroll throughout the year. You can help provide school supplies for all our new students and also for our Adopt a Class program by checking out the Madison Wish List at http://a.co/8PPiCMC . Please contact the principal if you have any questions about Madison’s Adopt a Class program.
