Every Friday is Show Your School Pride Day

That’s right, every Friday students, staff, and volunteers can show Madison school spirit by wearing a Madison logo tee shirt or sweatshirt, or by simply wearing something blue. Madison will have special Madison School Spirit stickers to wear for those who don’t have anything blue to wear and would like to join in with the school spirit!

Racial Equity / BLM Resources

In February, students across the district will be engaging in activities related to Black Lives Matter using the  13 Guiding Principles to inform and lead discussion and activities. Madison will begin with the first few Guiding Principles which will be reworded in a student friendly format. We may not get to all of the first few Guiding Principles, but we will engage in the work and the shared journey. Part of the process is recognizing that black people have been treated unfairly and continue to be treated unfairly not only in our own community, state, and country, but in other countries as well. Another part of this process is to open spaces for students to reflect with each other and build empathy for each other’s experiences.

Madison Elementary will be engaging staff and students in ongoing conversations around the importance of recognizing the value that each individual student brings to the school community and beyond. We must show care and love for every student. Not despite the color of their skin, not regardless of who they are, rather because of the color of their skin and because of who they are. We talk about moving beyond, “I don’t see color,” to rather I see you and I see your color and it is something that I appreciate and adore about you. This is not a judgement of them but rather a recognition of the value they bring.

Some of our families have already asked about what books or stories are available to them to teach about Racial Equity at home with their own children. The link below is to a matrix of children's books grouped by each of the 13 Guiding Principles of BLM which have been adopted by the OSD School Board. Titles highlighted in green mean that we have these books available in the Madison school library for student checkout. Links are to an online read aloud of the book.

I am extremely grateful to be a part of a district that asks its students and leaders to engage in conversations that elevate the status of each and every student and recognizes the lasting harmful effects that oppression has had on Black people and all people in our country. Our students have the power and opportunity to change the world and highlight the value every student brings because of who they are. This is true liberty and true justice and this true freedom brings joy to all!

Thank you for being partners in this important work.

PTO Updates

Our next PTO meeting is coming up on Wednesday, February 15th - Please note the change of day for this meeting only (due to Valentine’s Day). Meetings will be once a month on the second Tuesday, 6:30-7:30 pm in the Madison library and childcare is provided. Don’t worry if you can’t make it - we post notes on our website afterwards, and you can always email us with questions!

Read-A-Thon Help Needed!
Madison’s Read-A-Thon is coming up in February/March. This is a 4-week reading challenge. Students get pledges to read a set number of minutes a day at home or at school. They track their reading and submit weekly tracking reports. They submit their pledges at the end of the month and prizes are awarded based on the tracking sheets returned.

This is one of the PTO’s major fundraisers that helps us support kids and the school. We are looking for folks to join the Read-A-Thon committee! Please email us at [email protected] if you can help us out! We can send you a list of the roles we are looking to fill.

Amazon Wish Lists
Looking for a way to plug in to Madison that is quick and easy? How about Amazon Wish Lists? We have set up a page on the PTO website that lists the Amazon Wish Lists for teachers and staff who have them, as well as a general PTO Amazon Wish List. Please check these out! You can also send them along to family members who may be interested in supporting your child’s classroom and/or school!

Searching for Madison’s Facebook Page?

It has come to our attention that there is an unofficial facebook page for Madison. The page is populated with photos and events when people unwittingly “check in” to it by referencing that unofficial page. Madison does not maintain this unofficial page, nor does it post to it. The official Madison facebook page can be found by searching for “MES Lion Cubs” or navigating to https://www.facebook.com/MESLionCubs. Check-ins should also be done at “MES Lion Cubs”. We are attempting to work with facebook to merge the pages/content so as to avoid confusion for anyone searching for our school on facebook.

Preparing for Inclement Weather

The winter season is upon us. Inclement weather may result in changes to the regular operations of our district and schools. The Olympia School District uses a variety of notification systems to reach out to staff and families in the event of inclement weather. Learn more about these systems as well as Two-hour Late Starts and School Cancellations on our Emergency Information page.

Madison Student Supplies (Adopt a Class)

As many of you know, Madison is the only school in the Olympia School District that provides Back to School supplies at no cost to all our students. We are able to do this by generous contributions in the form of supplies or monetary donations. To get a head start on fundraising for September’s School Supplies, a Madison Wish List has been created on Amazon for community members to browse and select items they wish to purchase for our students. Madison provides school supplies to all new students who enroll throughout the year. You can help provide school supplies for all our new students and also for our Adopt a Class program by checking out the Madison Wish List at http://a.co/8PPiCMC . Please contact the principal if you have any questions about Madison’s Adopt a Class program.
