Vision and Hearing Screening
Vision and HearingOn January 7th, the Lions Club annual Vision and Hearing screening is scheduled in the afternoon. All students are screened, except for 4th graders. Screening now includes both near and far vision, as well as hearing. Parents may opt out if they desire, otherwise the service is automatically provided at no charge to the schools or families. Trained Lions Club staff check hearing and vision using instruments certified by the state to provide accurate results. There is no parent notification of the initial Lions Club screening, regardless of the result. However, if the student does not pass the Lions Club screening, the school nurse will perform a re-screen prior to sending home documentation. Re-screen by the school nurse will usually occur within 4 weeks after the screening. Hearing rescreens are delayed in case an illness was affecting the student’s hearing for the initial Lion’s Club screening. Parents will be notified only if student does not pass both the initial and the follow up rescreen by the nurse. The above approach is consistent with the practices and expectations at other Olympia schools for Lions Club Vision and Hearing screening, re screen, and parent notification. Please contact our school Nurse Kim MacLurg at [email protected] with any questions you may have about the Lions Club screening.
